Obituary for Juanita BROWN

BROWN, Juanita “Nita”, of Dayton, Ohio, was born July 29, 1942. The clock stopped for Nita on June 12, 2020. She was preceded in death by her mother, Alberta Sumlin; father, Johnnie Sumlin; and sisters, Jacqueline Wills and Aziza Ali (Johnnie Mae Dowdell). Fun-loving Nita graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, class of 1960. She retired from the Veterans Administration, after 32 years of service as a supervisor in the Dietary Department. Affectionately known as “Buddie,” Nita never met a stranger, and if she thought you needed (or wanted) the shirt off her back, she would gladly hand it over. Nita was always the perfect host, and would get the party started by putting on her blues, snapping her fingers, and dancing. If you wanted a friendly game of bid whist, you had better bring your “A” game with a six-card kitty and sport it, all the while talking big smack across the board, but without arguments. She loved cooking, especially fried chicken and fish. Nita was the coupon queen—she never left home without them. Her house was always stocked full of necessities, enough to share. She saved coins and had a bank for everything. Nita leaves to cherish her memory, three sisters, Creola Madden, Eva M. Sumlin, and Gwendolyn Sumlin, all of Dayton; one nephew, Rodney (Monica) Sumlin (Dayton); four nieces, Kim Starks (Albuquerque, New Mexico), Dr. Regina R. Gullette (Dayton), Cassandra E. Starks (Dayton); and Dr. Marketa Wills (Tampa, Florida); and seven great nephews, Rodney Carpenter, Aaron Sumlin, Ajay Ball, Dwight Starks, Dave Kemps, Domonique Starks, DaAmir Starks; three great nieces, Evan M. Sumlin, Daknea Starks, and Deveny Starks; and 15 great-great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by one aunt, Verneta Thomas (Detroit, Michigan); close friends, Annette, Alice, Shirley, Angie, Cynthia, Bunni, Charlette, Sue, and Ryun; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Nita’s beautiful spirit will surely be missed by all. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, FRIDAY, June 19, 2020, at THOMAS FUNERAL HOME, 4520 Salem Ave., Trotwood, Ohio 45416. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. All visitors are required to wear a mask. Final disposition: Cremation.
