Obituary for James CARLTON Jr.

James Carlton Jr., 73 of Dayton, Ohio passed away on October 16, 2023. James Carlton Jr. was born in Dayton, Ohio on January 2, 1950 to Nellie R. and James Carlton Sr.

Growing up in Edgemont on Pontiac Street of Dayton, James enjoyed playing baseball and football with all his neighborhood friends; James attended Whitter Elementary School (grades K-8th); Mt Olive Missionary Baptist Church, and Trinity Missionary Baptist Church (Baptism, age 12). James attended Dunbar High, he loved his Dunbar Wolverines, Class of ‘68”. He retired from General Motors, Corp. after 30 years of service and dedicated 16 years with the Adult Day Care Program at Goodwill Easter Seals. James enjoyed dancing, line dancing, family, friends and playing Bid Whist and Corn Hole. Most of all, winning at it!

In 1997, James started visiting and eventually joined True Vine Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Dr. J. J. Lillard. It was during this season that James had a new birth, he became a new creature. 2 Corinthians 5:17 states, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature, old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new”. In 2001 James was ordained as a deacon at True Vine Missionary Baptist Church. James loved studying God’s Word. He attended Zion Hill Theological Institute and Seminary. James was a faithful member of the Saturday morning bible study class, Sunday School class, Mobile Ministry and Board of Deacons.

In 2007, James became a member of Mount Enon Missionary Baptist Church where he continued to serve dutifully as a member of the Deacon Board and the Security Team until his failing health in February 2022.

Preceded in death by his mother, Nellie R. Carlton; father, James Carlton Sr.; brothers, Dale Lee, and Mark A. “Tony” Carlton; his son Bryant Carlton, and Special friend, Deacon Robert Turner. James Carlton Jr. is survived by his devoted wife, Gwendolyn Carlton; 4 daughters, Angela R. “Lucy” Carlton of Dayton, Marcia Buchanan of Columbus, Gina of Cleveland, and Jonae Garrett of Dayton; 1 son, Brian (Debra) Garrett of Dayton; Grandchildren, Jamica Wright of Columbus and D’Andre (Samantha) Garrett of Cincinnati; 2 Brothers, Lester and Kevin Carlton of Dayton; 2 Sisters, Dr. Garnetta (Rev. Dr. Joseph) Smith of Matthews, NC and Felita R. Jordan of Dayton; 4 Sister in Laws, Theresa (Jonathon) Woodfork, Vivan (Bishop Pastor Timothy) Everett Sr, Wanda Burney, Yvonne Cosby; Brother in Law, Ike Burney; 2 Special Cousins, Byron and Wilbur Sr. Rutledge, and Jerry Reece all of Dayton; Special brother and Sister, Deacon Bobby (Jeanette) Jones of Dayton; a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends; Special friends, Stevie White, Bill (Julia) Henry and Ron Oddister

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, October 25th, 2023, at Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church, 1501 W. Third St., Dayton, Ohio 45402. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service. Interment: West Memory Garden Cemetery.
