Obituary for George SHERER Jr.

George Sherer Jr. was born January 3, 1927, in Dayton, Ohio to George Sherer Sr. and Luella Sherer (nee Black). He passed away on October 29, 2022, at HarborChase of Beavercreek. George was a lifelong resident of the Dayton area, and he had warm memories of his formative years on Dayton’s west side. Despite the difficulties of the Great Depression and racial tensions, George more often recalled challenges overcome through perseverance, the support of his large extended family, and the fabric of the community in which he lived. George graduated from Willard Elementary School and Roosevelt High School before serving in the U.S. Army in Germany as part of the 229 Engineer Battalion during World War II. Private First Class Sherer was honorably discharged in 1947. He returned to Ohio to earn a degree in Business Administration from University of Dayton and embark upon a career at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. In 1949 at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, he married his high school sweetheart, Ethel Ruth Sherer. They built a life and family together for over 68 years.

George was an avid sports fan, an academic tutor, and a lifelong learner as evidenced by his return to school for computer classes when he was in his mid-60s. George was a longstanding, active member of Amer Temple #107, where he was a past potentate; Ancient Square Lodge, where he was a Past Master; and Miami Consistory #26, where he was a 33° Mason. He was a charter member of Optimist International Club of Jefferson – Dayton, Ohio. George was a warm, quick-witted, engaging person who approached every stranger as a friend in the making. He will be missed sorely.

George was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, brother Alexander Sherer, sisters Edith Rutledge, Betty Jenkins Scott, and Doris Sanders, and daughter Kimberly. He leaves to cherish his memory daughter Shelley Sherer and son-in-law Mark Miller of South Orange, NJ, son George H. A. Sherer of Dayton, grandson Marcus Miller of New York City, granddaughter Elizabeth Miller, and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, and other relatives.

Services will be held on Thursday, November 10, 2022, at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 401 Paul Laurence Dunbar Street. Shrine and Masonic Memorial Services will begin at 10 am. Visitation will begin at 11 with funeral following at 11:30. Honor ceremony is scheduled for 1 pm at Dayton National Cemetery.
