Betty Louise Slaughter Williams Morrow, a Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Auntie, Grandmother and Loving Big Mama, will always be remembered as the woman who loved children and what she did to save lives and souls. She was outspoken, strong, fair, firm and a consistent praying woman. Ms. Betty is what most of us called her, but a chosen few could call her “Mama’. Her children were very special to her. This Queen gave birth to three children, Margaret Denise Williams, Jacqueline Ringer and Samuel Anthony Morrow. Trust and believe her children were very spoiled and greatly loved.

Those of you who had the opportunity to touch her heart will always remember her whether it be negative or positive. She taught all her children to “save money, watch your money” and most of all “do not give your money away”. Her, children came first in her life.

Her look paralyzed your thoughts, body movements and fears. You as a person knew she did not play. Therefore you stopped doing what you were doing at once. People respected Ms. Betty. She never apologized for her words or actions. Some of us became so use to her ways that we started changing.

Ms. Betty taught the world what Motherhood and strong Black Women stood for. She always stressed independence and self-reliance. Ms. Betty spent her early years in West Carrollton and East Dayton. In the fourth grade, she enrolled in Willard School on the corner of Summit & Germantown. In the fall of 1946, she was enrolled at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School as a 7th grader and graduated in June of 1952. Ms. Betty was still attending the events for Dunbar High School with pride. She will forever be a proud Dunbar Wolverine!

In 1952, Robert Williams and Betty Slaughter were united in marriage. Her first job was at Good Samaritan Hospital and over the course of 57 years, Ms. Morrow worked for her father at the B & G Bar/Restaurant, Marguerite Barbecue Inn, Converted Bar and all three of the Sam’s Bar locations. Ms. Betty worked for the City of Dayton, Montgomery County Animal Shelter, Valley Grove Missionary Baptist Church as Secretary and Dayton Public Schools as a Paraprofessional at Meadowdale Senior High School. In 1961, Ms. Betty moved her family to 955 Burleigh Avenue where she became a neighborhood legend. Over 200 people spent the night at 955 Burleigh. A few people became part of the Burleigh Street Gang!! Most of them called Ms. Betty-- “Mama”, Grandmama, Big Mama or Sis. Now that the time has come, she leaves to mourn a host of children, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, classmates, neighbors, and loved ones. Ms. Betty gave her family and friends 86 years of love and understanding. She will truly be missed.
